Closed Helical Oil/Grease Groove Machining on Turning Center

Closed helical oil / grease grooves are machined on bearing bushes to lubricate while sliding or rotating. Machining of helical grooves on turning center need manual calculation of coordinates, pitch and RPM by using live tools and single point tools. The final groove start point and exit points depend on machine axis and spindle synchronisation result. The pitch of helical groves are generally bigger - 10mm and above and as big as 200mm/rev and hence for the bigger pitch, the spindle needs to be rotated at a lower RPM and will have limitations of power and torque availability.

Making closed helical grooves on OD or ID on turning center:

Option 1: Turn mill center with live end mill

  • X – axis to maintain depth of grooves
  • Z axis for Pitch
  • C axis to rotate spindle

Option 2: Turning centers with threading cycle

  • X – axis to maintain depth of grooves
  • Z axis for Pitch
  • G33 with groove start angle and pitch

Note: Feed mm/min (RPM x Pitch) should not exceed 10000 mm/min

Program example:
Bore diameter 50 mm
Thread length 50 mm
Hand of Thread (groove) RH & LH
Start angle 0 deg
Groove depth 1.5 mm Groove depth depends on the helix angle clearance provided on tool
